VoyageATL (Atlanta) interview

Kim Dankoor shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Kim, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity, definitely integrity. Although for me, integrity is also closely connected to energy. You can’t fake energy, and I feel that people with integrity carry a certain energy around them. But okay, I’ll still choose integrity ;). It’s a personal trait I try to embody myself. Being consistent and doing the right thing out of principle—that’s what integrity means to me. Keeping it real is another way to put it. That’s why I (playfully) call myself the realest (reporter) on IG!

KIM presents her research at the national conference of Popular Culture and American Culture in New Orleans

The annual national conference is the Popular Culture Association / American Culture Association’s signature event. Each year, thousands of scholars from many academic disciplines across the globe travel to meet in a major American city to share and discuss their research at the conference in several venues: panel presentations, round tables, special sessions, film screenings, local tours, keynote speaker events, special awards ceremonies, and more. This year’s conference was held at the Marriott Canal Street hotel in New Orleans, from 16 – 19 April 2025. Kim presented the third chapter of her PhD: The importance of the “thick hourglass body ideal” in U.S. commercial women rap for young Dutch Black and White women’s body image. Her session/ talk was part of the Gender and Media Studies research area.

Guest speaker at Clark Atlanta University

Two weeks ago a digital editor of news network CNN spoke to the (Music) Journalism students of CAU; last week I got a chance to talk to professor Daniel’s class. I discussed my PhD research, my work as an interviewer, the concept of solutions journalism, my views on current Hip Hop culture from a sociological standpoint, cultural appropriation, and politics. Furthermore, I introduced them to some Dutch Hip Hop (political rap, party rap, and an example of cult. App/overcommercialized rap), and I shared my Tidal playlist…eeyyy.

Georgia State University students interview KIM

Bachelor journalism students interviewed Kim Dankoor about her views on Hip Hop culture (i.e. representations in commercial rap, underground rap around the world, the ‘2019 Grammy wins’ the Gucci boycott, and the future of this culture), the current state of journalism, stereotypes in popular media, and global politics. They also asked her questions about her career, her purpose in life and how she strives to make a difference in the media world. They were also curious about the cultural differences between the Netherlands, Suriname, and the United States. Kim’s interview will be published in print.

Thank you for allowing our class to interview you! I really appreciate your response to my question about why focus on contemporary Hip Hop as the medium for social change. (Vanessa, student and social media manager).

KIM interviews authors and producers about the topic: ‘women, love and sexuality’

For the digital channel BTV, KIM interviewed several actresses and producers who contributed to the special Women’s History Month edition of the BLUE SERIES. The series, which runs from March 14-17, 2019, will feature 6 one-act original plays written and directed by African American women. During the press mixer, KIM got a chance to ask the crew and cast of the plays, ‘The pink tackle box’, ‘One two many’, and ‘Abstract unveiled’ questions about their creative journeys, and the overall themes of the plays (young women’s journeys, sexual assault, stripper life).

Furthermore, for an Atlanta podcast, KIM interviewed Troya Bishop M.ED, the author of the book: ‘The answers to intimacy‘. The purpose of her book is to promote love, peace, and power. “Love is the most powerful entity in this world, so teaching people how do to a better job of loving themselves and each other is essential in accomplishing the ultimate goal of peace.” (Bishop, 2018).  Troya and KIM discussed intimacy, sex, love around the world, dating apps and the role social media might play in men’s and women’s expectations about love.

KIM at the BET experience (new series Boomerang wants to combat stereotypes)

During a Panel conversation at the BET experience in Atlanta, the cast and executive producers of the new series ‘Boomerang’ stressed the societal importance of the diverse representations of Black men and women in the series. As Halle Berry, co-producer of Boomerang, explained in a previous interview: “You cannot underestimate the power of seeing yourself on the screen”[…..] “It makes you feel legitimate and included, and helps other people understand who you are and where you come from. And each story builds on the next.” (Variety, 2018). At the BET experience, the 1) representations of the ‘dark chocolate’ and thick(er) women, 2) the portrayals of bisexual Black men , and 3) the socio-economic classes of the characters (mostly middle to upper) were widely discussed, and are meant to counter narratives about Black millennials. Hopefully the crew will also consider to include persons with different religious backgrounds, gender identities, and types of (dis) abilities. The series premieres on February 12th on BET.

Lena Waithe (executive producer Boomerang): “I literally want this show to change the face of BET.” […..]”It’s just going to be a phenomenal experience and I’m going to be in Atlanta making s—t happen” (Variety, 2018).
