Hip Hop Hooray! Themanummer over de kunstvormen in de hiphopcultuur

Hip Hop Hooray!

Hip Hop 50: There’s some womxn in da house!

During this lecture on Hip Hop feminism at ADE Beats 2023, Hip Hop scholar Kim Dankoor will shed a light on women’s contributions to Hip Hop culture. She will also explain why she feels this is the most inclusive form of feminism to date and why every Hip Hop enthusiast – women, men and everybody in between – should be a Hip Hop feminist.
From ‘U.N.I.T.Y’ and ‘Say Her Name’ to ‘Queen B*tch’ and ‘WAP’: be prepared to ‘move and shake a little’ during this lecture as she will not only use feminist insights to make her case but also some of the most iconic songs and videos in Hip Hop HERstory.
Join us at ADE Beats 2023, the international conference for hip hop, bass and beats, as part of the ADE Pro conference on the newly added ADE Saturday at Amsterdam Dance Event. ADE Beats is fully accessible with the ADE Pro Pass and ADE Lab Pass, and individual single-day tickets will also be available soon.

Meet Kim Dankoor | International Hip Hop scholar & Interviewer (interview with Voyage L.A.)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Dankoor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Ten years ago I decided to travel back and forth from Arnhem (the Netherlands, Europe) to Atlanta (United States). The people that I have met there truly inspired me to pursue a career as an (independent) Hip Hop scholar and interviewer. Atlanta is the current hip hop capital of the United States so I was able to do important research (which also helped me with my entrepreneurship in the Netherlands) and in interview celebrities and music artists. The boldness of entrepreneurship and the bravery of keep trying new things are important aspects that I have learned during my time in Atlanta.

(Globalized) Hip Hop culture, Popular culture, and the Politics of Representation

The once-humble (sub)culture of Hip Hop has come a long way since its inception in the 1970s in a disadvantaged neighborhood in the Bronx, as it is now an integral part of a (technology-mediated) global popular culture. From the latest Hip Hop dance crazes taking the online world by storm to talk show hosts using Hip Hop lingo. It is almost impossible to imagine Hip Hop culture as an invisible entity in popular culture. As representations in Hip Hop (and broader in popular culture) have the ability to shape our social and cultural worlds, the theoretical concept of the politics of representation is an important starting point to analyze (powerful) imagery in popular texts.

In this bachelor thesis class, we will (mainly) explore how representations in (popular) media texts (visual and written), relate to power, ideologies, institutionalized practices, audience perceptions and identity. Representations of ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, religion, age, and disability are the main focal points. Thesis topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Content analyses of representations in Hip Hop or (broader) popular culture (i.e., different musical genres, different popular culture texts).
  • Audience perceptions of, for instance, femininity in popular rap music.
  • Political Hip Hop and identity formation among youth.
  • Cultural appropriation of the Hip Hop aesthetics (e.g., street fashion, dance, language).
  • Exploring rap music and glocalization processes: how is rap music adopted in, for example, the Netherlands? Or Germany? Or Morocco? Or Japan?

We will work with concepts and theories from the fields of Sociology, Psychology, Hip Hop studies, Media studies, Cultural studies, and Intersectionality studies. Qualitative research methods used may include in-depth interviews, focus groups, observation research and/or textual analysis. Within this theme, supervision can be in Dutch or English.

Being a guest on the ‘We kill Cowboys’ #podcast was awesome! We talked about the state of Hip Hop culture, its political/societal implications, academics & global politics. Check out these Morehouse men’s podcast based in Atlanta!

Guest speaker at Clark Atlanta University

Two weeks ago a digital editor of news network CNN spoke to the (Music) Journalism students of CAU; last week I got a chance to talk to professor Daniel’s class. I discussed my PhD research, my work as an interviewer, the concept of solutions journalism, my views on current Hip Hop culture from a sociological standpoint, cultural appropriation, and politics. Furthermore, I introduced them to some Dutch Hip Hop (political rap, party rap, and an example of cult. App/overcommercialized rap), and I shared my Tidal playlist…eeyyy.

Georgia State University students interview KIM

Bachelor journalism students interviewed Kim Dankoor about her views on Hip Hop culture (i.e. representations in commercial rap, underground rap around the world, the ‘2019 Grammy wins’ the Gucci boycott, and the future of this culture), the current state of journalism, stereotypes in popular media, and global politics. They also asked her questions about her career, her purpose in life and how she strives to make a difference in the media world. They were also curious about the cultural differences between the Netherlands, Suriname, and the United States. Kim’s interview will be published in print.

Thank you for allowing our class to interview you! I really appreciate your response to my question about why focus on contemporary Hip Hop as the medium for social change. (Vanessa, student and social media manager).

Interview Kim Dankoor: A New Social Entrepreneur

Krista Kleinwort, Cultural Representative and Master student at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada), interviewed Kim Dankoor for her academic Assignment ‘Social Entrepreneurs’.  Read the interview if you want to know what drives Kim and why she chose Social Entrepreneurship.
Thank you, Krista! I will keep it moving ;).

Social Entrepreneur

Understanding the impact of media on consumers and awareness amongst media producers of the effects of their products impact has become Kim Dankoor’s focus. During her Master’s year of study at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands she increasingly recognized the chronic stigmatization and discrimination in media and was drawn to combine her work as a journalist with her growing understanding of the impact of media messages on consumers. She began with teaching media literacy to students after graduation. Recognizing the need for increased awareness about the messages in current media, she then created KIM (Kritische Inzichten op het gebied van Media or K(C)ritical Insights regarding Media). KIM’s main key activity is the use of “a two-way strategy: use media to make people aware of the possible influence of media (write articles, make short films, use diverse imagery as an editor/journalist and inspire my media colleagues) and create awareness among the audience about the possible influence of media” (Dankoor, 2015, personal correspondence).  As the author of documentaries, interviews and her own website, Kim moved recently to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue studies at Georgia State University. She is researching the impact of hip hop music videos on men as well as women’s self-concepts with particular emphasis on quantifying how hip hop music impacts consumers self-concept of physical attractiveness and romantic appeal (Dankoor, 2015, personal correspondence).

The business of KIM, or the activities undertaken by Kim Dankoor to address the problem of stigmatization and discrimination in the media can be clearly articulated via the Social Business Model Canvas. KIM has two main users or customers: media producers and media consumers.
