Instructor/supervisor ‘Hip Hop studies’ (for BA students at the Erasmus University Rotterdam)

(Globalized) Hip Hop culture, Popular culture, and the Politics of Representation

The once-humble (sub)culture of Hip Hop has come a long way since its inception in the 1970s in a disadvantaged neighborhood in the Bronx, as it is now an integral part of a (technology-mediated) global popular culture. From the latest Hip Hop dance crazes taking the online world by storm to talk show hosts using Hip Hop lingo. It is almost impossible to imagine Hip Hop culture as an invisible entity in popular culture. As representations in Hip Hop (and broader in popular culture) have the ability to shape our social and cultural worlds, the theoretical concept of the politics of representation is an important starting point to analyze (powerful) imagery in popular texts.

In this bachelor thesis class, we will (mainly) explore how representations in (popular) media texts (visual and written), relate to power, ideologies, institutionalized practices, audience perceptions and identity. Representations of ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, religion, age, and disability are the main focal points. Thesis topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Content analyses of representations in Hip Hop or (broader) popular culture (i.e., different musical genres, different popular culture texts).
  • Audience perceptions of, for instance, femininity in popular rap music.
  • Political Hip Hop and identity formation among youth.
  • Cultural appropriation of the Hip Hop aesthetics (e.g., street fashion, dance, language).
  • Exploring rap music and glocalization processes: how is rap music adopted in, for example, the Netherlands? Or Germany? Or Morocco? Or Japan?

We will work with concepts and theories from the fields of Sociology, Psychology, Hip Hop studies, Media studies, Cultural studies, and Intersectionality studies. Qualitative research methods used may include in-depth interviews, focus groups, observation research and/or textual analysis. Within this theme, supervision can be in Dutch or English.

KIM moderates a Hip Hop panel at Eurosonic Noorderslag

‘Name your 5 favourite rappers! How many of those are women? Although hip hop is a leading genre in many countries, female and non-binary talent is still underrepresented. What are the roadblocks, how do sexuality and sexism come into play and how can we create a (more) positive environment for those who don’t identify as a man?

During the Women in Hip Hop panel experts Terry Ellmer (creative director, DE), Kim Dankoor (researcher, NL), Beckie Sugden (talent agent, USA -i.a., Noname, Jhene Aiko, Anderson Paak-), Ariez (rap artist, UK), and Randall Span (music director FunX, NL) will shine a light on how the music industry can take responsibility and create more gender equality in the hiphop scene.
Don’t miss out and get your conference pass via esns.nl.’

Teaser reportage: ‘Representin’ realness: vrouwen in hiphop’

KIM gives a lecture at TU Eindhoven (Studium Generale)

‘In this lecture, Kim Dankoor will focus on ‘Artists with Attitudez’: political rap expression throughout the years. From a cross-sectional, political, social and economic perspective, she’s going to dive into the relationship between rap and politics, with examples from four eras: from Grandmaster Flash’s (also N.W.A, Ice-T, etc.) political messages via gangsta rap to feministic politics (e.g., Queen Latifah,Megan Thee Stallion), to Kendrick Lamar’s ‘modern’ political messaging in rap and, of course, to  Black Lives Matter (Lil Baby). Date: October 27th.’

KIMs lecture at Erasmus University Rotterdam (politics and rap music)

KIM gave a lecture on the complex relationship between politics and rap music. The term ‘complex’ also refers to Love’s theory (2016) on complex personhood within Hip Hop culture. This class was part of professor Julian Schaap’s minor program: ‘Greatest Hits and Critics’ Picks.’

Illustrative quote: “Black people’s historic exclusion from social capital gave birth to a social construction that coexists with the dominant culture, borrowing necessary aspects to progress, but remained grounded in a type of counter-culture.” (Richardson & Scott, 2002).
