Urban arts hergedefinieerd

Het Digitale Dansgesprek, Let’s Talk’ Let’s Dance bestaat uit online werksessies, georganiseerd en/of gefaciliteerd door de Nederlandse Dansdagen, waarbij we de gehele danssector (en eventueel geïnteresseerd danspubliek) uitnodigen met elkaar in gesprek te gaan over urgente of simpelweg interessante onderwerpen.

In de Meervaart kun je live of via zoom het Dansgesprek ‘Urban arts hergedefinieerd’ volgen.

Urban. Een term die tegenwoordig steeds vaker wordt gebruikt als label voor een bepaalde stijl. Maar wat bedoelen we nu eigenlijk als we iets labelen als Urban? Deze vraag speelt ook een steeds prominentere rol in danswereld. Tijden het digitale dansgesprek: Urban arts hergedefinieerd, stellen we de term Urban centraal. Samen met verschillende makers, programmeurs en dansers uit de danssector die een affiniteit hebben met Urban dans bespreken we de term, wat houdt het in? Wanneer ben je een Urban danser/maker? Waarom hangt urban vaak samen met huidskleur? Betekent Urban per definitie van de straat of kan het ook hoge kunst behoren? Belangrijke vragen die tijdens dit digitale dansgesprek aan bod zullen komen. We hopen tijdens dit gesprek tot een aanzet voor een nieuwe definitie van het woord te komen.

Breaking Rules – European Hip Hop Meeting

On September 11th and 12th, 2020 the third edition of the European Hip Hop Studies Network Meeting will take place – live and online – in the Netherlands for the first time. And hip hop city Rotterdam will be hosting it. We want you to be there and join the conversation!

The line-up will be a mix of international hip hop scholars, hip hop artists, graffiti specialists and urban culture experts. Such as: Ian Solomon-Kawall, Gregor Bulc and Dieuwertje Heuvelings. There will be Artist Talks – by bboy break dancer Redo, rapper Akwasi, and street soccer specialist Rocky – on the impact of hip hop on their lives and how they use this impact to inspire youth. These sessions will be live streamed online.

Over Digitale geletterdheid

Digitale technologie heeft een onmisbare plek gekregen in ons sociale leven, in het onderwijs en op de arbeidsmarkt. Als je nu en in de toekomst als volwaardig burger wilt participeren en ook succesvol wilt zijn op de (toekomstige) arbeidsmarkt, dan zijn naast taal- en leesvaardigheid ook digitale vaardigheden een absolute voorwaarde. Kinderen moeten deze vaardigheden daarom al van jongs aan verwerven en ze zich eigen maken. Niet alleen ICT-basisvaardigheden, maar ook bewust en kritisch omgaan met digitale technologie. Hier ligt een belangrijke taak en verantwoordelijkheid voor scholen, bibliotheken, ouders en andere opvoedprofessionals.

‘Van 7 t/m 22 maart 2020 vindt in WG Kunst in Amsterdam het multidisciplinaire project ‘ Rebellen & Dwarsdenkers’, plaats, geïnspireerd op het thema van de boekenweek. Een rebelse tentoonstelling met een diversiteit aan kunstenaars: beeldende kunst, literatuur, video-interviews en muziek, waarin onderwerpen als feminisme, gender, seksualiteit en representatie aan de orde komen. Rebellen en Dwarsdenkers vertelt verhalen over een veelzijdige, rechtvaardige, bijna utopische maatschappij. De opening is op zaterdag 7 maart 17.00-19.00 uur.   Hosting en interviews: Kim Dankoor.’

From NY to LA and Atlanta: US regional Hip-Hop, identities and impact

Hip Hop culture has become a powerful global force and its musical expression, rap, is the most streamed musical genre in the world. There are several “social spheres” that explain how a culture that started in the 70s in a disadvantaged neighborhood in the Bronx, could become such a global phenomenon. Youth in different parts of the world are attracted to Hip Hop culture because they 1) identify with the hardships of marginalized groups, 2) feel connected with the Africanist aesthetics (e.g. rhetorical strategies) or 3) are drawn to the rebellious nature of Hip Hop (it challenges adult authority).

This lecture primary focuses on three important Hip Hop regions: East coast, West coast and the “Dirty South”. Their regional Hip Hop identities, influences on the global commodification processes of African-American (re)presentations, and the political and sociological implications of ‘Hip Hop images’ are discussed. The regional journey through Hip Hop culture starts in New York (70s/80s) and ends in Atlanta (10s); the city that is currently considered Hip Hop’s capital.

Guest speaker at Clark Atlanta University

Two weeks ago a digital editor of news network CNN spoke to the (Music) Journalism students of CAU; last week I got a chance to talk to professor Daniel’s class. I discussed my PhD research, my work as an interviewer, the concept of solutions journalism, my views on current Hip Hop culture from a sociological standpoint, cultural appropriation, and politics. Furthermore, I introduced them to some Dutch Hip Hop (political rap, party rap, and an example of cult. App/overcommercialized rap), and I shared my Tidal playlist…eeyyy.

Georgia State University students interview KIM

Bachelor journalism students interviewed Kim Dankoor about her views on Hip Hop culture (i.e. representations in commercial rap, underground rap around the world, the ‘2019 Grammy wins’ the Gucci boycott, and the future of this culture), the current state of journalism, stereotypes in popular media, and global politics. They also asked her questions about her career, her purpose in life and how she strives to make a difference in the media world. They were also curious about the cultural differences between the Netherlands, Suriname, and the United States. Kim’s interview will be published in print.

KIM interviews authors and producers about the topic: ‘women, love and sexuality’

For the digital channel BTV, KIM interviewed several actresses and producers who contributed to the special Women’s History Month edition of the BLUE SERIES. The series, which runs from March 14-17, 2019, will feature 6 one-act original plays written and directed by African American women. During the press mixer, KIM got a chance to ask the crew and cast of the plays, ‘The pink tackle box’, ‘One two many’, and ‘Abstract unveiled’ questions about their creative journeys, and the overall themes of the plays (young women’s journeys, sexual assault, stripper life).

Furthermore, for an Atlanta podcast, KIM interviewed Troya Bishop M.ED, the author of the book: ‘The answers to intimacy‘. The purpose of her book is to promote love, peace, and power. “Love is the most powerful entity in this world, so teaching people how do to a better job of loving themselves and each other is essential in accomplishing the ultimate goal of peace.” (Bishop, 2018).  Troya and KIM discussed intimacy, sex, love around the world, dating apps and the role social media might play in men’s and women’s expectations about love.
