KIM vertelt over hiphopdisstracks (KRO/NCRV radio-interview)

“[…] de Amerikaanse Kendrick Lamar en Drake vechten het via woordkunst met elkaar uit. Volgens rapmuziekdeskundige Kim Dankoor is 2024 al het jaar van de disstracks. Maar wat zijn disstracks – met de ‘dis’ voor disrespect – en wanneer zijn die goed?

Kim vertelt over de Amerikaanse Roxanne Shanté, die op veertien-jarige leeftijd de eerste was die een echte disstrack maakte als reactie op een nummer van jongensgroep UTFO. De jongens maakten een nummer over een fictieve Roxanne die zij belachelijk maakten nadat deze ‘Roxanne’ hen afwees.

En hoewel disstracks een integraal onderdeel van hiphop zijn, zijn ze ook in andere genres te horen, denk bijvoorbeeld aan de leden van the Beatles en Taylor Swift.”

Poetry of memory: why does Hip Hop need archiving?

If we haven’t heard it, has it ever been played?

In this radio conversation with Kim Dankoor and Quinsy Gario, we will try to figure out how we can or should remember music, protest, and lifestyle that is hip hop.

Discussing what it means to “archive” both on a personal and institutional level, we will look at both power and poetry of memory, sound, image and all that falls in between.

This conversation will be released together with Ja Ja Ja Nee Nee Nee and will be in English.
